Information we collect
Haptonos LLC collects no personal data through SongTrail. Specifically, the app does not collect, transmit, or store on any server:
- Names, email addresses, phone numbers, or user accounts of any kind — SongTrail has no sign-in and no user registration.
- Location data, precise or approximate.
- Contacts, calendar, photos, SMS, or call logs.
- Device identifiers, advertising IDs, or persistent tracking identifiers.
- Usage analytics, telemetry, or crash reports. The app contains no analytics or crash-reporting SDK — no Firebase, no Google Analytics, no Crashlytics, and no third-party ad network.
- Your music files, audio content, or the names and folder structure of your music library.
Because there is no backend, there is no account to delete and no server-side profile associated with you.
Information stored on your device
SongTrail creates and maintains data locally on your device so the app can function. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly export it yourself (see Section 06). It includes:
- An index of the music files in the folder you selected — file names, folder paths, and metadata read from the files (title, artist, album, track number, year, duration, embedded album art).
- Your song ratings, play counts, skip counts, and playback history.
- Your queue state, last-played position, saved searches, filters, and app settings such as theme, car mode, and censoring preferences.
- Cached album artwork and, if you use the censoring feature, cached analysis results and downloaded model files.
This data is stored in SongTrail's private application storage, which other apps cannot read. SongTrail accesses your music files in read-only mode and never modifies, deletes, moves, or uploads them.
Network activity and third-party services
SongTrail performs no network activity at all during normal use. Browsing, playback, scanning your library, album art, search, and backup are entirely offline.
Network requests occur only when you actively run the optional censoring analysis on a track. This is never automatic and never runs across your library in the background — a request is made only for the specific song you choose to analyze. In that case the app contacts exactly two services:
| Service | Purpose | What is sent |
|---|---|---|
| LRCLIB lrclib.net |
Looks up song lyrics used to detect profanity in a track. | Only the artist name and track title read from the song's own metadata tags — the title is cleaned of extraneous markers such as “(Explicit)” or remix labels before it is sent — and, for exact-match lookups, the track's duration in seconds. A User-Agent string identifying SongTrail and its version number accompanies the request. No file paths, no file contents or audio, no device information, no user or account identifiers, and no analytics are sent. As with any web request, LRCLIB's servers will see your device's IP address. |
| GitHub Releases github.com |
One-time download of the on-device speech-analysis models, the first time you run censoring analysis. | A standard file download request. No personal data is sent. GitHub's CDN will see your device's IP address and standard request headers. |
Haptonos LLC has no control over these third parties' own data practices. Their policies are available here: LRCLIB and the GitHub Privacy Statement.
If you never enable censoring, SongTrail makes no outbound network connection whatsoever.
Permissions and why they are needed
| Permission | Why SongTrail requests it |
|---|---|
| Folder access (Storage Access Framework) |
You pick one folder containing your music. SongTrail reads that folder to build its library. It requests no broad storage permission and cannot see files outside the folder you chose. Access is read-only, and you can revoke it at any time in Android Settings. |
| Foreground service (media playback) |
Lets music keep playing when the app is in the background or the screen is off, and powers the media notification and lock-screen controls. Install-time permissions; no data is collected. |
| Wake lock | Held only while music is actually playing, so the device does not suspend mid-song once the screen locks. Released as soon as playback stops. Install-time permission; no data is collected. |
| Foreground service (data sync) |
Lets a long-running censoring analysis job continue while you switch apps. Used only for on-device processing. |
| Notifications | Optional. Requested only if you turn on censoring, and never at launch. Used solely to show the progress of the one-time model download and of a censoring analysis while it runs, so you can see what SongTrail is doing in the background. If you decline, those jobs still run — you simply will not see their progress. No notification contains anything about your music. |
| Bluetooth (nearby devices) |
Optional. Requested only if you turn on automatic Car Mode detection, and never at launch. Used solely to read the name and device class of a currently connected Bluetooth device so SongTrail can tell whether you are in your car. This is evaluated on-device and never stored or transmitted. If you decline, Car Mode still works as a manual toggle. This permission is not used for location, and SongTrail does not scan for nearby devices. |
| Internet | Required by Android as an install-time permission, which cannot be requested later. It is used exclusively for the two censoring-related requests described in Section 03. |
Audio analysis (censoring feature)
SongTrail's optional censoring feature analyzes song audio to identify and mute profanity. All audio processing happens entirely on your device, using speech-recognition models that run locally. Your audio is never uploaded, streamed, or shared with Haptonos LLC or any third party. The only information that leaves your device for this feature is the text lyrics lookup described in Section 03.
Backups and exports
Manual export. SongTrail lets you export your ratings, play history, and settings to a backup file (.strbak). This file is created only when you request it, is saved where you choose, and is shared only with the app or person you send it to. Haptonos LLC never receives it.
Android Auto Backup. SongTrail participates in Android's standard app-backup system, which means Android may copy the app's local data — ratings, settings, library index — to your own Google Drive backup, subject to your device's backup settings and Google's privacy policy. Haptonos LLC has no access to these backups. You can disable this in Android Settings under Backup.
Data sharing and sale
Haptonos LLC does not sell, rent, trade, or share personal information, because SongTrail does not collect any. There are no advertising networks, data brokers, or marketing partners in the app. We may disclose information only if required to do so by law — though in practice we hold no user data that could be disclosed.
Data retention and deletion
All SongTrail data lives on your device, so you control it completely:
- Clear individual data — ratings, history, caches, analysis results — from within the app's Settings.
- Clear all app data via Android Settings → Apps → SongTrail → Storage → Clear data.
- Uninstalling SongTrail removes all of its data from your device. Your music files themselves are untouched.
- If you have Android Auto Backup enabled, delete the corresponding backup from your Google account to remove that copy.
Haptonos LLC retains nothing, because nothing is ever sent to us.
Children's privacy
SongTrail is a general-audience application and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children — indeed, we do not collect personal information from anyone. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the app, please contact us and we will address it promptly.
Security
Because SongTrail keeps all data on your device and inside the app's private storage area, your information is protected by Android's application sandbox and by your device's own lock screen and encryption. Network requests made by the censoring feature use encrypted HTTPS connections. No transmission or storage method is completely secure, but the app's design deliberately minimizes risk by not collecting or transmitting personal data in the first place.
Your privacy rights
Privacy laws including the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA) give you rights to access, correct, delete, and port your personal data, and to opt out of its sale.
Since SongTrail collects and holds no personal data on any server, there is nothing for us to access, export, correct, or delete on your behalf, and no personal information is sold or shared for cross-context behavioral advertising. You retain full control over your local data directly on your device, as described in Section 08. If you have questions about your rights, contact us using the details below.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy if the app's functionality changes — for example, if a future version adds a feature that uses the network. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page and, for material changes, note the change within the app or in the Google Play listing. Continued use of SongTrail after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
